Best Oktoberfest Beer: Ohio
At the official Oktoberfest celebration in Munich, you’ll find exactly six breweries represented. The dominance of these core beer brands does not allow for new entries to the competition. This international event is rich in German heritage and local traditions.
Ohio has its own legacy of German immigrants settling within its boarders, and Oktoberfest festivals are found throughout the buckeye state. In that spirit, Ohio breweries represent Oktoberfest beer with their own unique brands and brews.

“The big thing they (BrewPigeon.com users) talk about is the quality of the beer,” Peter added. These are beers that they will be writing about on forums on UnTappd, on Drizly, on beer forums, on Facebook… We are kind of their one-stop shop for a lot of these craft beers which they otherwise would not have access to.”
Inside Our Craft Beer Collection
-
Oktoberfest
- Blue Heron Brewing
The Blue Heron Brewery of Medina, Ohio brings its own “Oktoberfest” to the 2021 Brew Pigeon collection. Brew master Mike Piazza’s German-style Oktoberfest is expected to turn some heads this fall. Nestled in Austin Badger Park, this brewery and event center offer an inviting outing for Medina County locals. But it’s the taste of “Oktober” that fans will appreciate.
“Blue Heron makes some of the best underrated beers I’ve had,” Krafcik said. “They’re in Medina too, which is also good for us because we’re from Medina.”
-
Rockin' The Rhein
- Fretboard Brewing
For fans of this Blue Ash, Ohio-based legacy, it’s all about the bands and the brews. Fretboard Brewing offers year-round entertainment sporting the brand “Music To My Beers”. Their list of craft brews are classified as Year-Round Chart Toppers or Seasonal & One Hit Wonders. “Rockin’ The Rhein” is a toasted biscuit and balanced sweet malt Oktoberfest lager Cincy-area connoisseurs have come to enjoy.
-
Ignite The Jack-O-Lantern
- Ignite Brewing
In the words of the team at Ignite Brewing Company, “we have scoured the patch to find the perfect match.” This Barberton, Ohio brewery and taproom represents its seasonal brews with “Ignite The Jack-O-Lantern”. Head Brewer Jason Porter and team boast a passion for making a difference in their community. The company’s brand pays homage to the Diamond Match Company founded nearby in 1880. But it’s their Oktober Ale which will ignite your taste buds this fall.
-
Pumpcan Spiced Ale
- MadTree Brewing
Head brewer Ryan Blevins describes his “Pumpcan Spiced Ale” as “all the flavors of your favorite pumpkin pie without the pumpkin.” MadTree Brewing’s fall craft beer incorporates cinnamon, nutmeg, and molasses into a rich 7.9% ABV boozy ale. The Cincinnati-based firm supports many local organizations with donations and scholarships. And yes, MadTree even coordinates a tree planting program. Nothing says fall like a delicious spiced ale.
-
Haunted Hayride Pumpkin Ale
- Masthead Brewing Co.
First on our list to incorporate a spooky theme is Masthead Brewing Co. of Cleveland. Their “Haunted Hayride Pumpkin Ale” is self-described as a pumpkin / yam beer, incorporating cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger. Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the brewery was once an auto dealership. It now sports a 100-foot bar, 300-seat taproom, and a Neapolitan-style pizza kitchen.
-
Festbier
- Saucy Brew Works
Brew master Eric Anderson adds his German style Oktoberfest to the Saucy list of seasonal favorites. Saucy Brew Works has taken their brand and achieved rapid growth with three Cleveland area brewpub and coffeehouses, adding Columbus and Detroit to the mix. “Festbier” is described as a traditional-style brew, with a medium light body, and bold carbonation. Saucy’s brews are always a favorite of Brew Pigeon fans.
“It’s always an exciting time when you have one of the largest up and coming breweries in the state,” Krafcik said. “Brett Zimmerman… is a very determined, very smart guy in the industry. It’s really exciting that… these breweries are looking as our product and saying – “you guys know what you’re doing – we want to partner with you.”
-
Proast
- Twin Oast Brewing
The team at Twin Oast Brewing is a strong partner with BrewPigeon.com, and their popular flight of beers are consistently ordered. When the fall season begins, brew masters release their custom “Proast”, a Marzen-style German lager. The Port Clinton-based facility is located on a 60-acre farm estate, and is a destination stop for Ohio craft brew fans. Our 2021 Best Oktoberfest beer collection wouldn’t be proper without this Lake Erie islands institution.
“The beer’s fantastic. Fortunately for us, we get to deliver it,” Krafcik added. “It’s such a unique experience when you go there (the Twin Oast brewery). That’s also want makes it stand out.”
